11/7 -- If Today is Your Birthday...

(Karen's Flowers, Lake Shannon, 2001)The older the friend the better.

(Plautus)

...If today is your birthday, you truly are the very first friend I made in Greensboro. Actually, you're the first friend that Greg made. He "made" you at the bus stop...

...If today is your birthday, that's not as racy as it sounds -- I'm talking about the school bus stop! It was Meagan's first day of kindergarten, and your Carrie was a seasoned first-grader. Greg came home and told me he'd met the nicest neighbor, and that her daughter had taken a rather anxious Meagan under her wing.

...If today is your birthday, that morning at the bus stop led Greg to your door the following Saturday afternoon to ask if your husband could come out and play -- Frisbee golf, that is. (The answer was no, but the invitation led to many fun times for our families!)

...If today is your birthday, we've shared a lot, although, regrettably, it's been a while since we've gotten together.

...If today is your birthday, I think this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson is particularly poignant:

"Go oft to the house of thy friend, for weeds choke the unused path."

...If today is your birthday, then I want to pull up those weeds and clear that path! The memories we've shared are, for the most part, sharp and clear. Let's get busy making some more!

...If today is your birthday, I am wishing you a wonderful weekend with your three beautiful daughters, a safe journey home, and a year that will bring plenty of hope and joy!

Happy Birthday, Stutts! Here's to renewed friendship!
